Healthcare IT Fundamentals

Course Description:
This course is specifically designed for Health Information professionals to understand information technology in modern healthcare organization with an emphasis on organization and management of healthcare IT. Use of information technology in hospital clinical, support, and administrative departments is increasing and use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) will continue to broaden and alter the job responsibilities of health information technicians. With the use of EHRs, technicians must be familiar with computer software, maintaining security, and analyzing electronic data to improve healthcare information. Medical records and health information technicians' duties vary with the size of the facility where they work.

Work environment 
Health information technicians work in pleasant and comfortable offices. This is one of the few health-related occupations in which there is no direct hands-on patient care. Health information technicians usually work a typical 40-hour week. Some overtime may be required. In health facilities that are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, technicians may work day, evening, and night shifts.

  Target Audience

Individuals trained as specialists in this role will assist in documenting, analyzing and reorganizing the work of a healthcare provider to take full advantage of the features of health IT to improve health and care.

  Prerequisites

Students must have a high school diploma or completed GED.

       field including a brief overview of various healthcare technologies currently in use.

•    Common hardware components, including processing, storage, input, and output
       devices and connectors
•    Basic types of software and considerations for installing, updating, and upgrading
       software.
•    Standard configuration options, file systems, and file and folder management tasks
       in the Windows operating system.
•    Common network types, architectures, and topologies.
•    Focus on newer technologies including internet/intranet applications, wireless
       networking, and database technologies.
•    Topics will include HIPPA and privacy requirements.
